RADMILA SHEKERINSKA JANKOVSKA

Shekerinska_biografijaShe was first elected Minister of Defence in May 2017 and during that term the Republic of North Macedonia became the 30th full-fledged member of NATO, which was the strategic goal of our country since its independence.

Radmila Shekerinska Jankovska was born on 10 June 1972, in Skopje. She graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Skopje, in 1995. She holds a Master’s degree in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.

In May 2018, the Republic of France awarded her the Order of the Commander of the National Order of Merit of France. The Order is awarded for outstanding civic merit and was established in 1963 by General de Gaulle. She is the first politician from the Republic of North Macedonia to receive recognition of this rank from the Republic of France.

In the period 2002-2006, Shekerinska was Deputy Prime Minister in charge of European Integration and Coordinator for Foreign Assistance. It was during her tenure that our country gained the European Union membership candidate status. In 2009 and 2012, Shekerinska was elected head of the OSCE/ODIHR observation missions for the presidential and parliamentary elections in Kyrgyzstan and Armenia.

Shekerinska represented the citizens in the Assembly in the period 1998-2002 and 2006-2011. She chaired the National Council for European Integrations since its inception until 2014. She was part of the Assembly delegations for cooperation with the European Parliament and the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

In 2005, she became the recipient of the Young Global Leader Award, given by the World Economic Forum. The award was presented for her commitment and dedication to European integration in the Western Balkans. She is a member of the Munich Young Leaders group established as part of the Munich Security Conference and has been a member of the European Strategic Forum, the Schengen White List Advisory Board and the Council of the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy.

In 2008, she was elected one of the Vice-Presidents of the Socialist International (SI), a position she held until 2011. She is a member of the Presidency of the Party of European Socialists (PES), which unites the Social Democratic, Socialist and Labour parties in Europe.

Shekerinska was President of SDSM from 2006 to 2008. She is the only woman to have led one of the major political parties in the Republic of North Macedonia to date.

Radmila Shekerinska-Jankovska is married and has a daughter. She speaks English and French.
